Distinguished and Famous people from Western Australia

🏛️ Edith Cowan

Edith Cowan was born near Geraldton in 1861 and became the first woman elected to an Australian parliament when she won West Perth in 1921. Long before that election, she worked for women and children through welfare, education and community organisations. Family life and public service developed alongside each other, rather than politics appearing suddenly at the ballot box. Her parliamentary breakthrough belongs to a much longer record of organising and reform. Western Australia was both her home and the setting in which she challenged expectations about who could take part in public decisions.

📖 Sally Morgan

Sally Morgan was born in Perth in 1951 and studied at the University of Western Australia. Research into her Aboriginal family history became the foundation of My Place, published in 1987. The book combines her account with the voices of relatives, connecting a personal search for identity with experiences reaching into the Pilbara. Painting and printmaking formed another substantial part of her work. Her Western Australian story crosses generations and places: the city where she grew up, the institutions where she studied and the family histories that gave her writing and images their direction.

🔬 Barry Marshall and Robin Warren

Barry Marshall and Robin Warren carried out research at Royal Perth Hospital that transformed understanding of stomach disease. Warren's observations of bacteria in gastric tissue led to collaboration with Marshall and the identification of Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. They shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Marshall was born at Kalgoorlie and trained in Western Australia; Warren brought pathology expertise to their partnership. Their achievement grew from closely examining evidence that challenged prevailing explanations, with Perth hospital laboratories providing the setting for work of international consequence.

🎬 Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger was born in Perth in 1979 and built a screen career that reached far beyond Western Australia. Roles in Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight demonstrated the range behind his early popularity, with his performance as the Joker bringing a posthumous Academy Award. He died in 2008. A Western Australian Museum exhibition, developed with his family, later brought photographs, objects and creative work together to explore the person behind the films. The state's connection rests on his beginnings and continuing family associations, alongside its role in preserving material from his short career.

🏅 Shirley Strickland

Shirley Strickland grew up in Western Australia's wheatbelt and combined athletics with scientific study. Across the London, Helsinki and Melbourne Olympics she won seven medals, including three gold. Victories in the 80-metre hurdles at Helsinki and Melbourne made her a particularly formidable presence in an event demanding both speed and precision. Her later name was Shirley de la Hunty. Sporting success ran in the family—her father had won the Stawell Gift—but her own achievements established an exceptional record, spanning three Games and helping reshape expectations of Australian women in international athletics.
